Can you post some of this great info in the 'Forum' section so that it's publicly available to the entire network... it's too good to be hidden only on your page alone!
We've begun the Rockland Sustainabilitly Society, and our first action we want to focus on is exactly what you were a part of in New Paltz. Nyack, a supposedly progressive village, is actually far behind other cities especially with respect to recycling and handling of solid waste from area businesses—especially restaurants. There are NO public recycing bins, and there is NO infrastructure in place to handle community composting, which is a shame, and it's a relatively small enough project to set our sights on to experience the first small success as a group.
Please share your experience of what was achieved in New Paltz in the 'Forum' area of this network. Research is already underway, we'v'e got phone calls in to the Department of Public Works, and the Hillburn processing plant, which handles the entire Rockland area's recyclable materials. First step, learn everything there is to know about the existing setup, and the capacity it can handle. Then make a plan of action to garner community support and make our presence felt at the Village Board meetings. The next Nyack Village board meeting is Aug 9, which I will be attending to inquire about previous attempts or current efforts that may be in progress for this.
Ideally, there should be a small team of people in each Rockland town or village doing the exact same thing so it can be a coordinated effort, and make more of an impact.
Animals raised for food produce 130 times as much fecal and urinary waste as the entire U.S. population! A groundbreaking 2006 report from the United Nations concluded that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.
This video is gross (filled with poo and close up shots of cows taking a poo) but it is powerful so watch and let others watch.
Still think you can be a meat-eating environmentalist??????
I agree with you about the compost. My idea is that we can approach resturants with an offer to promote their business here if they agree to give us their compost. I will approach the Art Cafe with this offer and see where it will lead us. One problem I can anticipate with this is that resturat employees will mix non-compost food such as meat in their compost pile. From my experience with the first pile tom brought me and was mixed with meat leftovers, it is very hard to seperate it. The people collecting the compost will have to be educated.
Try to approach business in New City, like the "Back to Earth" healthfood store to collect their compost. You also need to find a local place to damp it.
hi,
this is Gil, Tom's friend. first, welcome to our society. Your brother wanted to do it for along time, he just needed that little push...
My sister is a vegan too. I don't eat red meat for ecological reasons. About composting, I am sure you can find a neibour who will gladly take your compost stuff. Tom and Dana are saving it for my backyard.
You can do too.
About recycling bins in busy streets, that's a great idea. I think you can write a letter to clarkstown recycling department and make as many residents sign on it as you can (at least 100) to request this. I don't think its is such a big investment for them.
About making our towns feel more like a community, well, this is our idea hear. we want to share info. and to find these activities that can unite us as a community.

What book, article, film etc. caused your awakening?
Might just have been all of my books as a child where the non-human animals were personified living their lives as humans do. Formed my mind and heart to look at them as they are, living beings we share this world with (even if they are not driving cars or sitting next to us in class).
A lot of music I listened to at a young age, such as Bad Religion, Crass, and other early hardcore bands wrote much of politics, oppression and "freedom" which led me to question pretty much everything that had been shoved down my throat.
****Peter Singer's Animal Liberation probably had the most profound effect on me in further nurturing my animal rights ideologies.
What do you wish were different about your town/city
Community compost bins; more available information on projects/agendas within the local government; recycling bins on busy streets are needed; and to change the feeling of a real lack of community.
Word of advice to those who are on the verge of their Awakening
Go vegan. Seriously, people talk a lot about doing the least amount of harm, I think it starts with feeling some compassion about destruction, be it in workplaces (sweatshops), in forests with lumber and the plastics industry which is so damn toxic to the environment, a vegan lifestyle incoroporates all elements and works it's best to limit the amount of suffering to the earth and it's humans and non-humans.
