Hey Gil!
There's always tons of stuff going on in SD. I have been working with the Sierra Club in an effort to remove invasive plants that aren't native to Southern California, specifically pampas grass. Nasty, nasty stuff! People are always asking about the scratches all over my arms from it, I guess its a great way to start up a conversation and get people involved ;). A couple other cool things around SD to check out that I'm involved with as well: www.projectwildlife.org and www.sdtt.org is a lot of fun and very useful for us outdoorsy people! Also, www.fundforanimals.org is a great organization and I'm pretty sure they have a couple wildlife centers of some sort over on the East coast (check em out!). I'm mostly involved with wildlife-type programs. Another GREAT program that has done amazing things for SD is I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) www.ilacsd.org Every month they have a couple days when people can work together to clean up certain areas, especially the beaches and canyons.
Those are all of the programs I have first-hand experience with, but there are SO MANY in Southern California, I could list for days! It's incredible, these programs have made a remarkable difference for our community. They just need to advertise more, they are hard to find unless you're really looking.
You're in NY? What's going on over there right now? Any favorite organizations/programs?
:)

Hi Gil,
I haven't been here long enough to see what they're doing for the environment, but I can tell you that there are way too many cars. You have to drive in order to go anywhere, and that includes driving on the highway. So that part sucks.

As for composting, I mean on a greater scale. People with backyards are priviliged to be able to have a composting area. As for the public domain, think about how many people eat out and throw out food--also, hair salons-hair is great for composting so if there were community composts availalble we could utilize every resource possible. When I lived in New Paltz, I was on the Environmental Commission and we worked on getting recycling bins on the streets, we collaborated with the DPW as they helped dispose properly once the bins were filled. They were the size of street garbage bins, so there was plenty in it. I have to go back and find the info from the people that distributed the bins.

Thanks for the invite. Momi is going to give you a call today. He has to study for an exam this weekend, but we would love to visit sometime and let the babies play.

Welcome everyone. We are working on making our own community more sustainable. In order to do so we need your help and support. Please post any ideas for achieving this goal, one step at a time.

What book, article, film etc. caused your awakening?
A National Geographic article "After Oil" opened my eyes to the approaching energy crisis and alternative energy solutions.
Al Gore's "An Inconvinient True" is a shoking report on the ongoing climate crisis and the future of the planet ecosystems.
What do you wish were different about your town/city
I wish that people will be less dependent on cars to do their daily commute to the grocery store or to work. I want to see more wide sidewalks, safe bicycle lanes, more train or shuttle to train stations and playgrounds in my town.
Word of advice to those who are on the verge of their Awakening
start small. commit to do one thing towards your goal every day. My goal is to lead a social and enviromental change in my own community. I organized and participated in an Eco-Team and am now working on spreading the word out and creating a sustainable education program for kids. You can't change the world in one day but you can defenetly make it better enery day!

Happy Thanksgiving and Special Thanks to the U.S from Israel

I just came a cross a suprising piece of information that I am sure will leave you all speechless:

The Turkey, a native American bird which was proposed by Ben Franklin to be the national bird, was imported to Israel in the 1950's and quickly became an economic altern
