Hi all,
Here is a summary of our last meeting:
1.We shared the Energy month actions taken. It looks like most of us did the basic stuff with insulation upgrades being the tasks left to get done.
Please keep following your energy bills to find out the "after" results of this month at the end of the program.
2.We discussed our next three topics:consumption, water, and transportation. In consumption we discussed the community effect of buying food localy, direct from the producers, and in bulk quantities. We agreed to share trips to the farmer market in Stone Barn, Hungry Hollow, Fairway, and Wholefood by annoucing planned trips to the group. For example, Mark offered to pick up online orders from Fairway on tuesdays and thursdays in his way home. Although the workbook suggests convering 50 dollars a month towards buying local, we agreed to convert maximum of our food purchases towards local produce.
For water conservation, we discussed the following actions:
Installing water saving kits like the kit Tom brought in which includes low flow shower heads, kitchen aretor and toilet water tanks. We also agreed to take water consumption meter reading to find out our consumption and if we have any leaks. Finally, we agreed to employ water saving habits such as conserving tap, shower and outdoor water use.
In transportation, we discussed the effect of well maintained car on fuel consumption and we agreed to check tire pressure once a month, try to use public transportation when we can and combine trips. For the long term we agreed to try to find ways to work close to home or from home to minimize our need to commute.
We will work on our consumption habits for the next two weeks, and will work on water and transportation habits in the following week. Please make sure to check in for the weekly discussions to report your progress and get inspired.
The last topic we discussed was the Low Carbon Diet program. Tom introduced the LCD program which we plan to employ as a group as part of our "empowering others" task. The LCD is the new version of the EcoTeam program which is updated, streamlined, and redesigned to enhance community supported action from the bottom up. Make sure to read the Portland case study prior to our next meeting.
We didn't agree on a date for our next meeting. I will suggest to meet on December 9 at 10am at my house. Please respond to here and let me know if it this date works for you.
Have a fun and productive consumption, water, and transportation month.
Gil
