We Are Awake

Thinking globally, acting locally

If you're not a vegan/vegetarian but want to eat organic AND local (the most sustainable way to go) -- here's a great organic farm in Ancramdale, NY (Dutchess County). You can buy it at the farm or order online here:

or come on over to Irvington and buy it at Geordanes on Main St:

Dine's farm is in the Catskills in Oak Hill, New York (a 2 hour drive). The meats can be found at the Hungry Hollow Co-op or at the Nyack Farmer's market (when they reopen), and you can buy directly from the farmer. Their website: www.dinesfarms.net

Hungry Hollow told me that they can't sell Dines' meats due to some Ag & Markets regulation, but they do sell 8 o'clock ranch-very good. Dines does do home delivery when the farmer's markets are closed for the season (they do both Suffern and Nyack markets in season). Another good resource is Hemlock Hill in Cortlandt Manor. They're small and it's good to call ahead to accommodate their butchering schedule (so you get the cuts you want). Soons Orchard in New Hampton sells regionally produced pastured organic meats by '3C Beef' (Chester, NY).

On a related note, I made a trip to Freedom Hill Farm in Otisville last weekend and their 23 jersey cows are making some FINE milk, which you can legally purchase raw from the proprietors. Since it's about $10 is gas for me to go there round trip, I'm interested in anyone who'd like to rotate a pick up schedule or trade gas $ for delivery. If anyone is interested in other sources of pastured meats and REAL dairy goods, please feel free to email me offlist, as I have some good sources for all.
